Chardham Yatra Guide: Route, Temples, Tips and Planning from Bangalore

The Chardham Yatra is a pilgrimage to four revered Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. For pilgrims from Bangalore it takes more planning than simply picking a package, because the route brings mountain roads, long drives, walking sections and weather that can change within hours.

This guide walks you through the four dhams, the usual route, registration, packing, health and the mistakes worth avoiding, so you can choose an itinerary that suits your pace and fitness. If you would rather not coordinate every detail yourself, Bhageerathi Travels runs organised Chardham departures with transport, stay, meals and a tour manager in one plan.

Chardham Yatra quick facts

  • The four dhams: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas.
  • Usual circuit: Haridwar or Rishikesh to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, then back.
  • Walking sections: about 6 km each way to Yamunotri and about 18 km each way to Kedarnath, on foot, on horseback or by doli.
  • Registration: pilgrims and vehicles register on the official Uttarakhand portal, with verification at the dhams.
  • Gateway from Bangalore: a flight to Delhi or Dehradun, then the road to Haridwar.
  • Durations we offer: 13 days for the classic circuit, 15 days with Pancha Badri and 22 days combined with Kashi.

What is the Chardham Yatra?

Uttarakhand Tourism identifies Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath as the Char Dham of the state. This Himalayan circuit, often called the Chota Char Dham, is different from the wider Char Dham tradition of four great pilgrimage centres spread across India.

The yatra combines deep religious meaning with a demanding mountain environment. It pays to weigh the practical side (transport, walking, weather and accommodation) as carefully as the spiritual purpose of the journey.

The four dhams of Uttarakhand

1. Yamunotri

Yamunotri is associated with Goddess Yamuna and sits high in the Garhwal Himalayas. Vehicles stop at the road head of Janki Chatti, and pilgrims continue about 6 km each way on foot, on horseback or by doli. On our itinerary the group stays at Barkot and leaves at 6 am for Janki Chatti, about 45 km or two hours away. Local arrangements change, so check the latest route, weather and access information before you set out.

2. Gangotri

Gangotri is associated with the River Ganga, worshipped here as Goddess Bhagirathi. The temple area can be reached by road, about 90 km from Uttarkashi, and pilgrims usually take a holy dip in the river before darshan. It is still a mountain drive, though, so allow generous time and never judge Himalayan distances by city standards. Most itineraries halt at Uttarkashi, where you can also visit the Sri Vishwanath Temple.

3. Kedarnath

Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the most prominent shrines in Uttarakhand and the most demanding leg of the yatra. Pilgrims who walk, ride a horse or travel by doli cover about 18 km each way, while others fly in by helicopter where services operate. Fitness, sturdy footwear, rain and cold protection and a steady pace matter most here. A good itinerary keeps a reserve day for Kedarnath in case weather or crowds delay darshan.

4. Badrinath

Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is usually the last dham on a traditional circuit. Pilgrims bathe in the hot spring early in the morning before darshan, and those who wish can perform Pitru Karma rituals here. Mana village nearby, subject to local access conditions, adds a short walk of about 1.5 km to the Saraswati river, Vyas Gufa and Ganesh Gufa.

Chardham Yatra route: what to expect

A commonly planned circuit runs from Haridwar or Rishikesh to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and then returns to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Uttarakhand Tourism’s published Char Dham itineraries follow a similar order. The exact plan still varies with the operator, road conditions, hotels, temple schedules and the starting point.

For a traveller from Bangalore, the first question is how you reach the northern gateway. Check whether flights, airport transfers and the first night’s stay are part of the package before you book. Here is how our 13 day itinerary is paced:

How to plan a Chardham Yatra from Bangalore

Start with the complete itinerary

Read the whole plan before you compare prices: starting city, arrival point, transfers, nights, temple visits, trekking sections, hotels, meals, local transport, tour manager support and the return. A longer itinerary leaves more room for rest than one that squeezes the circuit into fewer days.

Understand what is included

A headline price on its own tells you very little. Check whether flights or trains, local transport, accommodation, meals, sightseeing, entrance charges, tour manager services, transfers and taxes are covered. Our Chardham tours, for example, include a 2×2 push-back AC bus (non-AC vehicles in the mountain areas), twin-sharing deluxe rooms (non-AC in the Chardham sector), all meals cooked South Indian style by trained cooks, entrance, jeep and auto charges as per the itinerary, and a dedicated tour manager. Flights or trains, helicopter tickets and GST (5%) are extra. Hotels at the dhams are non-star properties, handpicked as the best available in those locations.

Chardham Yatra registration: what to know

The official Uttarakhand Char Dham registration portal states that pilgrims must register themselves and their vehicles before starting the journey and complete verification at the dhams. The portal issues registration letters that are checked through QR codes.

Besides pilgrim and vehicle registration, the portal covers tour planning, registration letter verification, health registration, weather information, helicopter service information and the yatri certificate. Requirements and procedures can change from one season to the next, so check the official portal shortly before departure.

What to pack for the yatra

Mountain weather turns quickly, so pack in layers and keep your luggage light, as you will change hotels often.

Clothing

  • Warm layers and comfortable trousers
  • Light rain protection
  • Woollen socks, gloves and a warm cap
  • Comfortable walking shoes and a spare pair

Personal essentials

  • Government issued ID and your registration documents
  • Regular medicines and a basic first aid kit
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and toiletries
  • A water bottle, power bank and small backpack

Health and fitness on the yatra

A Chardham pilgrimage can be physically demanding. Long road journeys, walking, changes in altitude, irregular meal timings and cold weather affect people differently. If you are older or have an existing medical condition, discuss the trip with your doctor and follow their advice.

A vehicle covering most of the distance does not make the yatra easy. If you travel with senior citizens, children or anyone with limited mobility, ask about walking distances, local help and hotels before confirming. Our Chardham packages offer customised menus for senior citizens and diabetic travellers, and the premium departure follows a relaxed, senior-friendly pace.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Planning only around the temples. The drives between the dhams are a big part of the trip, so build them into your expectations.
  2. Ignoring the weather. Mountain weather can close roads and shift schedules. Keep some flexibility.
  3. Packing the wrong footwear. Supportive shoes make a real difference on the walking sections.
  4. Booking without reading the fine print. Go through the itinerary, inclusions, exclusions and cancellation conditions.
  5. Treating registration as an afterthought. Register in time and keep the documents within reach.
  6. Underestimating rest. This is not a regular sightseeing holiday. Good sleep and breaks make it far more manageable.

Independent travel or an organised Chardham tour?

Group travelNeeds more coordinationMuch simpler

Neither approach suits everyone. Independent travel appeals to people who value flexibility, while an organised yatra brings transport, hotels and the itinerary together, which helps most when a family or group is travelling from another city.

Is the Chardham Yatra right for you?

It may suit you if you want to visit all four dhams, are comfortable with long mountain drives, can manage the walking sections or plan to use horses, dolis or helicopters, and prefer a structured plan with family or a group. Weigh your fitness, mobility, medical needs and preferred pace honestly before booking. If Kedarnath and Badrinath alone fit your time and energy better, our 9 days Do Dham Yatra covers just those two shrines.

Practical tips for a comfortable journey

  • Travel light: a smaller bag is easier to handle at every transfer.
  • Keep documents handy: never bury your ID and registration papers deep in a suitcase.
  • Keep buffer time: do not book onward travel too tightly after the mountain leg. On our tours, extra days caused by weather, natural calamities, transport disruptions or administrative restrictions are charged at ₹4,000 per person per day.
  • Book helicopters and sevas early: helicopter tickets and special sevas at Kedarnath and Badrinath are booked online, and our team can guide you.

Plan your Chardham Yatra with Bhageerathi Travels

Frequently asked questions

What are the four dhams of the Chardham Yatra?

The Uttarakhand circuit covers Yamunotri (Goddess Yamuna), Gangotri (the Ganga, worshipped as Goddess Bhagirathi), Kedarnath (Lord Shiva) and Badrinath (Lord Vishnu). Uttarakhand Tourism lists these four as the Char Dham of the state, and most pilgrims visit them in that order, starting and ending at Haridwar or Rishikesh.

How many days does the Chardham Yatra take from Bangalore?

It depends on the route and how many rest days you keep. Our classic plan takes 13 days, beginning with a flight to Delhi and ending with a flight home from Dehradun or Delhi. We also run a 15 day version with Pancha Badri and a 22 day yatra that adds Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Gaya.

Is registration compulsory for the Chardham Yatra?

Yes. According to the official Uttarakhand portal, every pilgrim and vehicle has to be registered before the yatra begins, and registration letters are verified through QR codes at the dhams. Procedures can change between seasons, so check the portal shortly before travel and carry the documents with you throughout.

How difficult are the walks to Kedarnath and Yamunotri?

Kedarnath is the toughest stretch, roughly 18 km each way, while Yamunotri is about 6 km each way from Janki Chatti. Both can be done on foot, on horseback or by doli, and Kedarnath also has helicopter services. Helicopter tickets are booked online and are not part of our package price.

Can senior citizens do the Chardham Yatra?

Many seniors complete it, but suitability depends on individual health, mobility and fitness, so speak to your doctor first. Pick an itinerary with a reserve day and enough rest. Our Chardham packages offer customised menus for senior citizens and diabetic travellers, and the premium departure keeps small groups and a relaxed pace.

What does a Chardham package with Bhageerathi Travels cost?

The 13 days Chardham Yatra starts from ₹51,400 per adult (GST 5% extra), with flights or trains charged separately. The price covers road transport, twin-sharing rooms, all vegetarian meals, entrance and jeep charges as per the itinerary and a tour manager. Fares can change, so confirm the current price when you book.
